Identification and development of innovative platform technologies is critical in enabling the discovery of novel, highly differentiated small molecule drugs. The Emerging Technologies Team of Discovery Sciences focuses on the creation, incubation and application of cutting-edge platforms to pursue increasingly challenging drug discovery opportunities. Major activities will include assay development, computational modeling, and pilot screening/synthetic work, to discover druggable small molecule modulators of protein-protein interactions, and to profile the pharmacological action of drugs employing high resolution phenotypic readouts. The Emerging Technologies Team will closely collaborate with Janssen Therapy Areas and functional teams, Innovation Centers in San Francisco, Boston, London and Shanghai, and external collaborators in academia and industry.
The Associate Scientist II is responsible for conducing in vitro studies to probe the pharmacology of disease mechanisms and pathways. We are seeking an individual with a proven track record in the adaptation of methodologies involving high end automation to demanding assays probing a variety of test tube readouts of macromolecule behavior. Key duties will include the design, optimization and execution of molecular pharmacology, biochemistry and biophysical experiments for compound screening, compound mechanism of action and efficacy, employing preferentially cell-free systems and as needed, model cell systems expressing targets for drug discovery in recombinant form.
The candidate will be capable of the designing and performing a variety of in vitro assays, in collaboration with scientists within and outside the Team. The successful candidate will be savvy in the use of analytical packages and reporting of experimental data. Strong collaboration and communication skills and demonstrated ability to perform in the context of a multidisciplinary team are required.
Qualifications

The successful candidate must be a self-starter with abilities to work in a team-oriented, fast-paced research environment. Experience in recombinant DNA technologies, cell culture, methodologies and principles employed in molecular pharmacology analysis of compound action, screening readouts (LC-MS, HTRF/LANCE and other fluorescence-based methods, FLIPR, ThermoFluor, biosensors, detection of radioisotopes), and other cell-free and cell-based analytical methods (ELISA, western blot, Luminex(TM)) is required. Extensive experience in the application of robotics to the development and deployment of assays reporting on macromolecular behavior or cellular function is required. Familiarity with the use of software packages for data analysis, and strong skills in the application of statistical & QC principles is strongly preferred, but not required.
